Ian Busher

After many years of exhibiting his more industrial mixed media work he has returned to more traditional painting.

He paints in a geometric style reminiscent of mid-century abstracts. While he’s constantly evolving the core key elements remain consistent: balance; composition, form, flow, movement and colour. While a viewer may not be certain what they are looking at or what it represents, if there is a comfort and harmony in the elements of the piece he feels it is doing it's job: not to hit the viewer over the head with obvious meaning, but be representative of a time or place or mood. Ian’s studio is in Toronto and his works can be found in galleries as well as private and corporate collections worldwide.

I try to make things that are amazing. That's really the goal. Photography for me is the process of turning ordinary or overlooked things into something that causes you to pause and examine and make your eyes explode because it's so incredibly beautiful. I want to take you there I want to show you - I want to make you see the world the way I see it.

MICHELLE VELLA

is a contemporary POP Portrait artist that has fun with her colourful WIDE BIG EYES signature style, making people smile, while telling the story of her subjects through words and symbols interwoven into each portrait.

In 2015, at the young age of 50, Michelle had a plan to sell her graphic design business to pursue something more creative. It had been 30 years since studying Fine Arts, and she started to paint again finding her big eye style. Posting a portrait to instagram everyday, she quickly caught the eye of W Magazine and the NY fashion scene.

Just months into her new career as an artist, Fashion designer and icon Diane von Furstenberg discovered Vella on Instagram, asking to purchase Vella’s BIG EYE portrait of DVF, which is now part of Diane’s art collection at the DVF Fashion House in NYC.

Michelle’s brand is on fire, painting non-stop, while designing a new WIDE BIG EYES women’s clothing line set to debut on The Shopping Channel’s (TSC) “Style Matter’s with Jeanne Beker” this April 4th.

Michelle believes anything is possible, “go after your dream, make it bigger, work hard, create opportunities, stay positive, be confident, smile and always grateful.

Michelle Vella has been featured on CNN Style, The MARILYN DENIS Show, City Line, and in Harper’s BAZAAR Thailand, W Magazine, FASHION Magazine, City Life, and ELLE CANADA.

Michelle is based in Toronto, Canada

Ileana Grimm

SINCE 1986 the world has laughed with Grimm on dozens of products and original art. Throughout her career, she has developed a distinct style; signified by her use of opaque, primary colours, bold black lines and playful visual metaphors.

Following a very successful relationship with US based S2 Art operating seven Jack Galleries in Las Vegas, Grimm's work is art that is true to its roots, full of life and vibrant. Internationally known, Ileana creates humorous pop art and her vision and interpretation of the world provoke thought, with her energy bouncing right off of her canvasses. Whether it’s the humour, the bold colours, a love of her characters, or an appreciation of the pop art genre, people of every age are drawn to the artwork of Ileana Grimm.

Ileana continues to grow as an artist through her unique acrylic paintings and through licensing of i.grimm characters. Her pop art style is no secret to corporate Canada. Her work has been commissioned by the likes of the Toronto Stock Exchange, The Ontario Science Centre, The National Capital Commission, McMaster University, and Casino Rama to name a few. They were all drawn to her bright, bold, inimitable strong original style that has captivated Grimm followers for years.

Dave MacVicar is a Canadian fine art photographer who currently resides in Toronto, Ontario.

Dave discovered his passion for photography when he purchased his first camera for the sole purpose of filming a music video. Dave always had an interest in studying photography, and with camera in hand, his curiosity led him outdoors where he began photographing his surroundings. During this period of learning the technical aspects of photography and experimenting with different styles, Dave found himself drawn to the intimacy of landscape photography.

With landscapes and seascapes as his primary focus, Dave’s fascination with symmetry and minimalism began to impact the evolution of his work. Traditional landscape photographs were eventually replaced by long exposure black and white images that are free of any unnecessary distractions. This style of photograph has become a signature part of Dave’s current work. In addition to his landscape and seascape images, Dave has also been focused on photographing architecture in a similar fashion. Many of Dave’s images have received international recognition and have garnered awards in several international competitions.

Whether he’s revisiting a familiar location minutes from home or exploring new territories abroad, Dave’s commitment to making great photographs is relentless.

Artist Statement                                                                                           I grew up in Cabbagetown, one of Canada’s most diverse neighbourhoods, the youngest of four children of immigrant parents. This became the ground of my experience: a world of individuals torn between the safety of community and the quest for freedom through assimilation. It is from within this space that I seek to expose the interplay of the familiar and the hostile other.

My work reflects the condition of uprootedness and estrangement. It probes the search for meaning and identity within the shadows of the strange and bounded by disruptive narratives of normalcy and belonging. It explores the left-behind refugees, rejects, and delinquents who are drawn to the very norms that have cast them out, characters who reside within a homeless space between past and future, self-possession and alienation, assimilation and native fealty.

Working with porcelain clay with light washes of underglaze, my figures suggest narratives of tension: between body and mind, play and drudgery, the grotesque and the beautiful. Both individual and archetypal, these figures repel and attract, giving grace to the human made monstrous by conventions that shun in order to preserve the purity of their systems. In each I invite viewers to write their own stories, to reflect on their masks and their own Janus-faced identities.

Vanessa McKernan received her Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Studio Art from Concordia University in 2006. In the year of her graduation she was also awarded the Cecil Buller - John J.A. Murphy Scholarship for Drawing. McKernan has exhibited within Canada, the United States and Central America. She lives in Toronto and works out of a studio located in the city’s Historic Distillery District.

“When I watch people in the world I wonder about how they got to be who they are. I wonder about their stories. I think about the pieces that make up the masks they put on and which of these masks they wear as they gather together, or sit alone. I wonder about my own masks too.

My paintings are narratives sewn together from pieces of stories; some personal, some universal, some completely fictional. I like to play with colour, decorative pattern and mark-making. I try to let myself give in to silly pleasures like (lately) the urge to draw flowers and make stencils. Somewhere between trying to tell a story and being playful the painting begins to take on a narrative all its own. This for me is the height of creative expression. When a piece is no longer confined to your intentions for it. When the work and the story truly become bigger than you.”

Drawn to esthetics at a young age, Marni was compelled to pick up a camera and begin to document what she saw. Launching a career in the film and television industry in 1979, she amassed 25 years of experience, credits and a respected reputation. But in 2003 Grossman travelled to West Africa to photograph a group of drummers and, there, she turned her camera towards the extraordinary she found in ordinary life. Since then Marni has endeavored to become a student of what is elusive and beautiful in the real and the natural.

The mystery and magnitude speak to her: sunlight paints the landscape a different hue at every moment; constantly changing weather leaves it's footprint on every blade of grass; an impassive mountain range breathes and subtly shifts. On the west coast of this continent, Grossman pointed her lens into the mist of Big Sur; in B.C. she was awed by Canada's Great Bear Rainforest and the fragility and nobility of it's indigenous bears, particularly the sacred and illusive White Spirit Bear, whose habitat is threatened. It is difficult and painstaking to capture such images but it is her aim to engage with and photograph what is ephemeral, evolving, endangered, innocent, dangerous and beautiful.

In this vein, Marni has also explored the abstract elements she finds, to record what is primary and naturally occurring in shape, colour, texture, light and shadow. Human sensibility depends on the existence of such beauty; on the possibility of encountering what takes our breath away and reminds us of our own vulnerability. Mani photographs not just with her eyes but instinctively from her heart, and with a desire to preserve - in the frame as well as in the landscape - the tenuous magnificence of places where not many people get to walk. Grossman's work as a photographer is less about composing the shot and more about becoming a medium for the fleeting canvases of art she finds around her. In her latest works, Grossman has moved into an expression of herself beyond where she has tread... exuding passion and movement in a still and ever so silent moment.

Marni is devoted to the environment and is printing using sustainable papers.

Bio

Hazel was born in Amsterdam shortly after her parents migrated there from China. Although she was raised in Holland the Chinese cultural influence on her was huge. Her cultural duality has shaped who she is today, how she sees things and the way in which she expresses herself in photography. Unconsciously the serenity, harmony and imaginary of Chinese art, combined with her awareness of western art have left an impression in her photographic style.

From an early age, she started to play with compact cameras and loved going through her mum’s black and white studio portraits from the sixties. Later she discovered the SLR cameras and found she could play with different objectives, combining apertures and shutter speeds and this opened up a whole new world to her. However, for a long time photography remained a much loved hobby and she chose to study Business Economics and worked internationally in the financial industry for a decade. When the right time came she decided to follow her passion for photography at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam. Shortly after beginning there, The Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam approached her to create an artwork to cover a huge wall, 7 meters long. During this process, which took more than a year, she was guided by her mentor. Her first international exhibition was in 2015 at Arta Gallery, located in Toronto’s historic district,  during the most prestigious curated Photo Festival (Contact Photography Festival) in Toronto. As a result of her association with Arta she got in contact with another Toronto Gallery, who also exhibited her work. Following on from this she continues to present her work both in The Netherlands and internationally. She has participated in many other festivals and art fairs including the Affordable Art Fair and was nominated for the ‘Rabo Ontdekt Talent Prijs’. She has also exhibited in Museums such as Hilversum Museum and Museum de Fundatie.

Artist Statement

As a fine art photographer, I allow my intuitive sense of direction to unfold and for spontaneity and improvisation to dominate my choices. I often start with a raw concept and it’s the subject, my surroundings and state of mind that inspires my creative process. Photography allows me and makes me feel safe to let go of all constraints and just let things happen. I love to challenge the rules of photography, to break away from expectations and push assumed boundaries out of my way. Photography helps me to quieten my analytical, controlling side and nurture my intuitive free spirit.

I’m driven by the desire to mould colours, light and movement. Layering light with motion and transposing the imagery through a motion blur allows me to create an abstract reality. Playing with the blurred line between photography and painting, reality and the imaginary excites and inspires me. My photography creates compositions where the internal and external worlds collide and where reality meets the imaginary. When I photograph I feel like I am painting with the camera, using the camera as the brush and my surroundings as paint.

For me Photography is a meditative process, providing me with the opportunity to be fully mindful within the moment. It’s a playground where I explore life and come to a deeper understanding of myself. In this process I allow myself to see a new reality. Through my artwork I aim to evoke curiosity in others and allow them to look deeply into these images and find their own reality and emotions in my work.
